Mr. Thakorbhai Patel : A Unique Personality

Shri Thakorbhai Patel Arts and Commerce College, Ankleshwar has figured out like a rising sun in the domain of higher education and it has set it’s temporary footing in the campus of Jinwala High school, Ankleshwar.

It would be appropriate on this occasion to shed some light on the rare personality of eminence after whom this college has been named.

When we cast a glance at the photograph of Mr. Thakorbhai Patel, it reveals that there is an uncommon combination of simplicity, innocence, serenity and fearlessness in his face. His bright eyes seem as though piercing like the rays of radium through the psyche of the opponent , whether he is faulty or an enemy. His wide forehead indicates a symptomatic royal gesture. If you look at his long ears, you get an impression of Buddha or Gandhiji which symbolise ardent spiritual consciousness. His prominent lips signify an adding sense of smiling simplicity and staunch masculinity. His sagacious sharp nose unmistakably amplify his far sight and determination.

If we look at the face of Mr. Thakorbhai Patel in its entirety, the image of an adorable hero , equipped with all heroic virtues, emerges. The face is flooded with self-confidence and quietude. His long neck speaks of his credibility. His broad chest indicates his store of emotions. His gradually inclining shoulders delineate his royal qualities. All virtues clubbed together make him a real folk hero. His strong physique makes him completely suitable for a ‘loknayak’.

सर्वगुणसंपन्नविशालकुलसंभव:

(Mahanayaka adorned with all virtues and born in a great lineage). Thakorbhai who attained the status of a folk hero in the true sense, was a man of constant action, who enriched agriculture in the costal saline area of Hansot ; he gave voice to the farmers' issues, fulfilled the leadership at the Hansot taluka level and became the responsible leader of Ankleshwar-Hansot constituency by asserting his potent Leadership l in Gujarat State Legislative Assembly.

The stature he attained during his life time was not gained through any enmeshed wealth, blessings of important persons family heritage or accomplished power but by winning the trust of the ordinary , down to earth, common man. He had the ability to combine the art of c listening to the pain and the sufferings of the common mass and the ability to solve them .He was infacta pillar of support for the common man in every possible manner.

‘This gem of a son’ was born on 7th February 1926 in the house of Mr. Gumanbhai Ganeshbhai Patel at Kudadara village of Hansot taluka of Bharuch district of Gujarat state in India, who is and will remain legendary as Thakorbhai Gumanbhai Patel, a true folk hero in the history of this soil.

Talking about the political career of Mr. Thakorbhai Patel, Thakorbhai served as the first Sarpanch of Kudadara Gram Panchayat and created a history. In 1957, he was selected as a representative of the local board of the taluka when Panchayat Raj was established in the state of Gujarat. He was elected as the first President of Hansot Taluka Panchayat of Bharuch District on 1st April 1963. The scope of social service was ever widening .From 1st April 1963 to 3rd February 1972 and from 21st March 1972 to 2nd September 1974 in the Bharatiya Janata Party from 24th February 1981 to 23rd February 1987, his work as the President of Taluka Panchayat can be considered as an eye-catcher in Hansot taluka.

Obviously truthful and outspoken he was, for Thakorbhai truly appreciated any official or noted person and, would tell him/her the facts without shrinking in a humorous way. He had the patience to listen to the offender. Side by side he could convince him/her by telling the bitter truth face to face. He had a rare ability of digging out truth from the surface. Thakorbhai was first elected as an MLA from Ankleshwar-Hansot constituency in 1975 and completed a five-year term till 1980 by doing many significant works of personal, social and collective development. In 1990, he won the Ankleshwar-Hansot assembly constituency for the second time from the Bharatiya Janata Party and devoted himself to public service for another five years till 1995.

Consistently active in the political arena and in the personal, social and collective spheres, Thakorbhai held high-level positions in many other organizations and was devoted to social service . He continued to manage various co-operative societies operating in Ankleshwar-Hansot area by holding the post of president. Apart from this, he held high-level positions in Gujarat Land Development Bank as President of Bharuch-Hansot, as President of TalukaKhedu Mandal, as Taluka Representative of Bharuch Zilla Panchayat in Marketing Yard of Hansot-Ankleshwar Taluka, as well as in many social cooperatives, banks etc.

Pandawai Sugar Factory in Hansottaluka is still functioning today. If we look at the past, when it was established, Mr. Thakorbhai had the lion's share in its foundation and formation.. At present, due to the devotion and perseverance of his worthy son Ishwar Singh, the sugar factory has gradually progressed and given the farmers a lot of happiness and has secured a prominent place in entire Gujarat. Fulfilling his given promise to our present Prime Minister and the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shree Narendrabhai Modi, Ishwar Singh Patel within a single year of time could complete the ethanol plant at Pandawai Sugar Mill.

As far as politics is concerned, Thakorbhai was known for his discipline and loyalty to the party. Even sitting in the opposition party, due to his truthful and fearless image, he could easily carry out works of public interest. Due to his industrious social commitment, the Hansot-Ankleshwar region remained prominent in the political map of Gujarat.

If we outline this great personality in brief, many of his virtues immediately come to the foreground... such as, reticent yet passionate, well connected with public yet with a stainless character, fearless yet taming his enemies, simple yet truth-seeking, generous yet justice-loving.

On 6th October, 1995 the mortal body of Shri Thakorbhai Patel passed away but it is believed that the fragrance of his social service will be scintillated in the mind of every inhabitant of this area.. Due to this college,, the young mass of Ankleshwar-Hansot will refresh the memory of Thakorbhai. Shree Thakorbhai's -wife Shantaben is content with cultivating the memories of the past and seeing the happy reality of the present.. Following the ideals of Late Thakor Bhai, Shantaben instilled these values in her children, turning them to the face of social service – as a blazing evidence their worthy son Ishwar Sigh is present amidst us bearing the torch of his father

Thakorbhai's personal, familial, social and political legacy has been directly inherited by his son Ishwar Singh. Providence always chooses one person from the family to carry forward this legacy: who is present here before us as IshwarSingha. Someone has aptly said :

वहाँतूफानभीहारजातेहै ,
जहाँकश्तियाँजिदपेहोतीहै।

It is the first time in the history of Gujarat that a defunct college has been revived by Sri VamalnathSeva Trust dedicated to society. Thus the undisputed "takeover" work of the Grants-in-Aid College represents the achievement of the Trust set goal. Seeing that the dream cherished by him is fulfilled by his son, his immortal soul from heaven would consider his human life as blessed.

In these challenging time, let us remember a few lines of the late Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee which may kindle the lamp of guidance for all of us -

बाधाएँआतीहैंआएँ
घिरेप्रलयकीघोरघटाएँ
पाँवोकेनीचेअंगारे
सिरपरबरसेंयदिज्वालाएँ
निजहाथोंमेंहँसतेहँसते
आगलगाकरजलनाहोगा
कदममिलाकरचलनाहोगा।

Shri Narendrabhai Modi, the worthy son of our Gujarat and the Prime Minister of India, has given India a revered place in the world. Let us conclude with his inspiring words -

मानाकिअंधेराघनाहै ;
लेकिनदियाजलानाकहांमनाहै ?
